| Speaking to thousands about SAVING LIVES through Organ Donation |
Shannon Devine addressed both the House of Representatives and the Senate asking for a change that would
move NC from a state of "intent" to one of "consent" when it comes to Organ Donation.
Several
months after Shannon's reign as Mrs. United States, the bill was passed, signed by the governor and went into law
October 1, 2007. As a result, those who wish to become a donor can do so more easily! Shannon & Jason Devine "live"
this cause. It is truly a family affair! We are so proud of Shannon's continued work to SAVE LIVES!
Sept. 2007
"The House voted unanimously (110 to 0) to concur
with the Senate amendment and the Bill will be sent to the Governor for his signature. My congratulations to Rep. Folwell
and the other sponsors for their efforts, and to all who worked to support this legislation,
and especially those who met on several occasions with Rep. Folwell in Raleigh on a moments notice.
A huge thanks to Angie Whitener, who as she was leaving her position in the Speaker's office, continued to be an advocate
and helped us connect up with folks. Thanks to Shannon Devine
for her wonderful talk in both the House and Senate as the Bill was introduced. A job well done and a great day for organ
donation in NC. More lives will be saved"
Best regards,

IT'S OFFICIAL: HOUSE BILL 1372 “THE HEART PREVAILS”
Heart on the Driver's License Legally Binding in North Carolina
Effective October 1, 2007, the donor registry operated by the NC Division of
Motor Vehicles (DMV) changes from one of intent to one of consent.
Currently, 3.3 million or 45% of the drivers
in North Carolina have a heart on their license. The information
is stored in a secure database that can only be accessed at the time of death by the state's three donor recovery agencies:
Carolina Donor Services, LifeShare Of The Carolinas and the NC Eye Bank. That information is then presented to the potential
donor's next-of-kin.
The new bill will improve the process of organ donation in North Carolina. It will
relieve families of the guesswork involved in making a decision during times of intense grief and enable the public to know
that their own thoughts and wishes will be carried out.
An online registry that will allow people to designate their wishes on donation without
a visit to the DMV is currently under development.
